WEEKLY NEWS & NOTES

Happy Mother’s Day! We are thankful for all of our moms and mentors at Somers Avenue. 

 

Ladies Morning Bible Class will have their regular monthly potluck this Wednesday, the third Wednesday of this month. Men are invited to the potluck.

 

The Morrilton Southern Christian food truck will be here Monday, June 10th for their quarterly good pick up. The items most needed at this time are cooking spray, BBQ sauce, snacks, and kids 3-in-1 (shampoo, conditioner, body wash). Please check expiration dates and place donations in the red tub in the hallway near the mailboxes. If you have any questions, contact Joe Ellis.

 

Travs Night: Somers is going to the ballpark to watch the Travelers play at 7:05pm on May 31st. We will have seats together, a private VIP area with an all-you-can-eat hot dog and hamburger buffet, and fireworks to top it all off! The cost is $17.50 per person (3 and under are free). Sign up via the emailed link by May 19th.

 

KEEP IN PRAYER

Mark and Leah Goodsell’s home in Hot Springs was hit by the tornado last night. They are safe, but their home took significant damage. Please be in prayer for their family. 

 

Mike Hughes’ sister, Vera Crain, fell and broke her arm. Prayers are appreciated.

 

Gary Lewis has been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer. He is awaiting test results.

 

Pam Lewis has been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. She is awaiting test results.

 

Stasia Vanwinkle had her week follow-up appointment on Tuesday. Her doctor said that her eye is healing well and that she can return to work. Her vision is not fully restored at this time, but it should get better as the gas bubble goes down. Thank you for all the prayers.

 

Chris and Stasia Vanwinkle request prayers for Chris’s dad, David, who will be having surgery soon.

 

LOOKING HEAD

The new T412 Class will meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:15 to 6:45pm in the M2 classroom of the Activities Center. This class is for children ages 3 through seniors in high school. The T412 class will focus on training children and teens to serve in the church in a variety of service areas. If you have questions, contact the church office.

WEEKLY NEWS & UPDATES:

Muffins for Moms and Mentors: It’s almost Mother’s Day and here at Somers we want to show our appreciation for our moms and mentors with a special grab-and-go breakfast on Sunday, May 12th. Moms, please swing by the refreshments table set out in the AC to grab a muffin and some coffee before bible class. Thank you for all you do!

 

New T412 Class: This Wednesday, May 8th, at 6:30pm there will be an informational meeting in the M2 classroom of the Activities Center to explain our new T412 class for children ages 3 through seniors in high school. The T412 class will focus on training children and teens to serve in the church in a variety of service areas. If you have questions, contact the church office.

 

Ladies Morning Bible Class will go to lunch at Charlotte’s in England, AR this Tuesday, and have postponed their regular monthly potluck from the second Wednesday to the third Wednesday of this month. 

 

KEEP IN PRAYER: 

Michael Barfield had successful knee surgery at Baptist North. Prayers are appreciated.

Stasia Vanwinkle went to the ER last Sunday with vision problems which eventually led to surgery. She had 11 different detach points on her retina. 1 major on and 10 minor ones. They have a “buckle” around her eye and gas inside it to hold everything in place to heal. She is restricted in her movements for at least a week. Prayers are appreciated.

Southern Christian Children’s Home in Morrilton, AR will have their annual homecoming on Saturday, May 4th. Registration begins at 9:30am, with the program at 10am, and BBQ lunch served at 11:30am. A flier is posted on the bulletin board outside the church office.

SomerTime Shirts: You should have received an email explaining our plan for every child to receive a new SomerTime shirt this summer. This email includes two links: one link for parents to give us their child’s shirt size and another link for backpack buddies to offer to “gift” (pay for) their little buddy’s shirt this summer. Melissa Milner has been discharged and will be recovering at Ann’s for several weeks.

John Ross requests prayers for his niece, Melva Jean Parish of Sallisaw, OK, whose son died unexpectedly this week. He was only 40 years old. 

 

Jamie Thornton’s mother, Becky Colvin, had successful surgery Tuesday morning.

WEEKLY NEWS & NOTES

Sign ups for the 2024 Somers Spring Family Retreat are now closed. We look forward to seeing many of you in Petit Jean April 26-28th. Contact Jonathan Penrod if you have any questions.

 

Wednesday Night Meal was postponed last week, but we will retry again this Wednesday! The menu is still taco salad. The cost is $5 per person or $10 per family. Guests are free! The meal is served from 5:30-6:30pm. Please RSVP on the Facebook Family Exchange page so that we can have an accurate food count. 

 

Ladies Chat will be next Friday, April 26th, from 10-noon in the Fellowship Room.

Janet Akins requests continued prayers for her parents, Orin and Ima Jean Robinson. Orin and Ima Jean are now both at Premier Health and Rehab. They will continue in long term care there after rehab. Cards and visits are appreciated. 

Tressa Ashberry’s dad, Jack Cole, had a successful double bypass surgery last Wednesday, April 17th. 

 

Clift Chaffin’s cousin’s baby, Lucy, had a successful heart surgery and finally got to go home from the hospital this week! Clift and Ashlyn thank everyone for your prayers. 

 

Gary Lewis has been diagnosed with stage 1 prostate cancer. He will go back to the doctor on May 1st.

 

Pam Lewis has been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. She had outpatient surgery on April 18th. This new diagnosis requires her to stop her MS medication at this time.

 

Melissa Milner had successful heart surgery on Monday, April 15th at Baptist in Little Rock.   She will remain in the hospital for several days.

 

Ron Reed has Covid.

 

Jamie Thornton requests continued prayers for her mother, Becky Colvin, who is at Jamie's home recovering from several medical issues.

Our deepest sympathy to Charles Voyles in the passing of Treva Saturday morning. There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, April 23rd at 1:30pm at Union Cemetery in Independence County. Please keep Charles and the family in your prayers.
